パリのド・ディオン・ブートン社は1883年からスチームカーを生産していたが、1895年からガソリン車に転向。軽量で信頼性の高いエンジンを開発し、先ず3輪車に搭載、その機動性、低価格でたちまちヨーロッパ市場で最もポピュラーな車となった。1898年には前部に客用シートを備えた改造4輪車も追加。しかし市場からの乗車定員増、乗客の安全性、快適性等の要求には応えられず、次第に市場を失い、3輪車、改造4輪車ともに1903年には生産が打ち切られた。
The De Dion-Bouton firm in Paris had been producing steam carriages since 1883, until its focus shifted to gasoline-powered vehicles in 1895. The company developed a reliable lightweight engine and fitted it to a 3-wheeler, making it the most popular powered vehicle in Europe at the time due to its agility and low price. The company also introduced a modified 4-wheeler with a front passenger seat in 1898, but it failed to satisfy the popular demand for greater capacity, safety, and passenger comfort, and production of both the 3- and 4-wheelers was discontinued in 1903.
