Throughout history, it had long
been man's dream to travel without having to rely on unpredictable animals, Leonardo
da Vinci, the great scientist, artist, and philosopher, designed a self-propelled,
wind-up vehicle. The value of the principles he employed in the steering apparatus, transmission,
design, and other features is recognized even today. But da Vinci's car was capable
of storing only a single power source, as in a wind-up toy,and that drawback stopped
it from becoming an epoch-making invention. |

The first car in history appeared
in France in 1769. Cugnot of King Louis XIV's army developed an
enormous front-wheel-drive,steampowered car to haul gun carriages.
The car failed because the large boiler was placed in the front
end, which became detached from the steering component during its
test drive. The second car, built in 1771, was later found by Napoleon
and is still preserved today in the Paris National Museum of Art. |
