Present and future of safety technology development at Toyota

Here is a diagram showing the new pre-crash safety system which will soon be commercialized.

This system utilizes a millimeter wave radar to detect the distance, speed and direction of objects in front of the car, as well as camera image to discern the size of such objects for the purpose of evaluating the risk of collision.
By employing this image fusion method, it is now possible to derive collision prediction information of higher accuracy and at an earlier stage.
When there is a high risk of collision, a warning is displayed together with a warning sound and braking responsiveness is heightened.
If the system judges that collision cannot be avoided, the seatbelts are pulled in, and brakes are automatically operated.
