Environment Improvement Projects Utilizing Toyota’s Unique Expertise
In 2001, UMWT in Malaysia launched the Toyota Eco Youth program for high schools near the company’s headquarters. Currently, teams from 16 selected high schools from around the country take part in the program each year. Each team (composed of 8 students and 2 teachers), working under the guidance of their respective teachers, plans and implements environmental improvement projects such as electricity conservation and wastewater treatment at school buildings and other facilities in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and the Department of Environment.
In addition, there has also been significant interest from neighboring countries about the unique measures within this environmental education program and its significance, leading TMMIN/TAM to inaugurate its own Toyota Eco Youth program in 2005 in cooperation with the Ministry of Education in Indonesia. Starting with the Toyota Eco Youth 4th program, TMMIN began to focus more on the building of Toyota Eco Plasma Schools across Indonesia by conducting Sustainability Contests in which previous winners compete to develop sustainable environmental improvement programs at school. The contests also encourage the development and use of environmentally friendly technology (Green Sound Technology). It is expected that these schools will become learning and implementation centers for environmental knowledge.
Through these programs, both companies have increased environmental awareness in over 8,000 students and teachers in Malaysia, and 31,000 students in Indonesia. The programs have also been highly praised by both the Malaysian and Indonesian governments for their educational value. |
