Japan’s Pinnacle of Racing: Speed and Strategy

As indicated by its name, the Formula NIPPON is a race competed by “formula” cars featuring a construction similar to that of an F1 car. Formula NIPPON is regarded as the top tier of motor sport in Japan.

The series began in 1996 as the re-launch of the Japanese F3000 Championship. 2010 marks the 15th year of Formula NIPPON. Recent news in the series includes an engine redesign in 2006—the engines being supplied by two different companies. Beginning in 2006, Toyota has supplied the RV8J, a 3-liter V8 engine. Toyota has powered the drivers’ and team champion in 2006, 2007 and 2008. With the new rule changes in 2009, Toyota has supplied the 3.4-liter V8 RV8K. The engine is also equipped with an “overtake system” that temporarily boosts the engine 400 RPM higher than the regular maximum.

The Formula NIPPON race is competed over a maximum distance of 250 km, with points awarded from P1 to P8 (points: 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1). The driver finishing P1 in qualifying is also awarded one championship point.

Driver rankings are determined by the total number of points awarded under this system. Team points are awarded on a per-entrant basis—the sum of points earned by both team drivers.

Tire changes and refueling during the race are not required by the rules. Each team determines what strategy they will use; differences in strategy can mean the difference between winning and losing. However, some races require pit stops for tire changes due to issues of chassis and engine compatibility with certain circuits.
